I have known many people throughout my life who are successful and have accumulated many things, but they are still feeling empty and something is missing. They often say to me, “Is this all there is to life?” The common routine is I get up in the morning and I eat. Then I go to work. I come home after work and do whatever chores need to be done, and I complete the evening watching TV or visiting with family or friends. Then I go to bed and start the same process all over again the next day. So, is this all there really is? Many are on the empty cycle of life, and it’s something like this…
- If I had a new house, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had a different job, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had more money, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had a new relationship, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I was married, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had children, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had a new car, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had a new hobby, I would be happy for a while. And then…
- If I had more alcohol, more drugs, more rock n roll, more sex then I would be happy for a while. And then, and then, and then… and the list goes on.
I will admit that I thought I would find fulfillment in life after pursuing and accomplishing many of the things on list above. However, something was still missing. What then will bring everlasting contentment, joy and peace in one’s life – something to permanently fill the emptiness?
We are all born alive physically, but we are spiritually dead (empty) towards God due to the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden. Only God can permanently fill the emptiness within us. The only everlasting satisfaction in life is through a close personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ says in (John 10:10): “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Jesus isn’t talking about a life of abundance as in material possessions, but a spiritually abundant life with Him at the center. A life that guarantees justification, salvation and sanctification. A life with Him in the here and now and for all of eternity. I finally found the permanent contentment, joy and peace that seemed to escape me for much of my life. I no longer live for the things of this world, but for my Lord and Savior.
What brings everlasting contentment, joy and peace to your life to fill the emptiness?
